Venancio P. Ziga

Venancio P. Ziga (May 20, 1902 – April 27, 1965) was a prominent Filipino lawyer and politician who distinguished himself through a long career in public service. He served in various capacities, including as a Governor of Albay province, a Member of the House of Representatives, and a Senator of the Philippines.

Early Life and Education Ziga was born on May 20, 1902, in Polangui, Albay. He pursued his higher education at the University of the Philippines, where he earned a degree from the College of Law.

Political Career Ziga's political career spanned several decades and saw him hold significant positions at both the provincial and national levels.

  • Governor of Albay: He served multiple terms as Governor of his home province of Albay, first from 1940 to 1941, and again from 1946 to 1947.
  • House of Representatives: Following his tenure as governor, Ziga was elected as the Representative for the 1st District of Albay, serving in the House of Representatives from 1949 to 1953.
  • Senate of the Philippines: His political career culminated with his election to the Senate of the Philippines, where he served a full term from 1955 to 1961. During his time in the Senate, he was a member of the Nacionalista Party.

Personal Life Venancio P. Ziga was married to Tecla San Andres Ziga, who was herself a distinguished figure in Philippine politics and law. Tecla San Andres Ziga also served as Governor of Albay and later as a Senator of the Philippines, making her the first woman to be elected to the Senate from the Bicol Region, and notably, the first woman to top the Philippine Bar Examination. Together, they established a prominent political legacy in the Bicol Region.

Death Venancio P. Ziga passed away on April 27, 1965.
