Velyka Bilozerka

Velyka Bilozerka (Ukrainian: Велика Білозерка) is a rural settlement (selyshche) in Ukraine, located within the Melitopol Raion of Zaporizhzhia Oblast.

Etymology

The name "Velyka Bilozerka" translates from Ukrainian as "Great White Lake" or "Large White Lake." This likely refers to a significant body of water or a landscape feature with light-colored soil or water that once characterized the area.

Geography and Location

Velyka Bilozerka is situated in the southern part of Ukraine, in the steppe zone, within the administrative boundaries of Zaporizhzhia Oblast. It lies on the banks of the Bilozerka River, a minor tributary that historically flowed into the Kakhovka Reservoir (before its destruction in 2023). The surrounding area is characterized by fertile chernozem soils, making it highly suitable for agriculture.

History

The settlement has a history rooted in the agricultural development of southern Ukraine. For a significant period, Velyka Bilozerka served as the administrative center of the Velyka Bilozerka Raion (district). However, as part of Ukraine's nationwide administrative reforms in 2020, the raion was abolished, and the settlement became part of the larger Melitopol Raion. Like much of southern Ukraine, its history has been influenced by various periods of rule, including the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union, and independent Ukraine.

Demographics

Prior to the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the estimated population of Velyka Bilozerka was approximately 8,000-9,000 residents. The population is predominantly ethnic Ukrainian.

Economy

The economy of Velyka Bilozerka is primarily agricultural. The fertile soils of the region support extensive cultivation of various crops, including grains (wheat, barley), sunflowers, and other agricultural products. Livestock farming also plays a role in the local economy.

Current Status

Since early March 2022, Velyka Bilozerka has been under Russian occupation as part of the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. The humanitarian and socio-economic situation in the settlement has been severely impacted by the occupation.
