Velko Yotov

Velko Yotov (Bulgarian: Велко Йотов; born 26 August 1970) is a Bulgarian former professional footballer who played as a forward or attacking midfielder. He is known for his technical skill, vision, and ability to score crucial goals throughout his career across various leagues.

Early Life and Career

Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, Yotov began his football career in the youth system of PFC Levski Sofia, one of Bulgaria's most prestigious clubs.

Club Career

  • Levski Sofia (1987–1993): Yotov made his professional debut with Levski Sofia, quickly establishing himself as a key player. During his time with the club, he won the Bulgarian A Group title in the 1992–93 season and two Bulgarian Cups in 1990–91 and 1991–92.
  • RCD Espanyol (1993–1995): Following his success in Bulgaria, Yotov moved to Spain to play for RCD Espanyol in La Liga. He played an important role during his tenure, gaining experience in one of Europe's top leagues.
  • Newell's Old Boys (1995–1999): Yotov then made a significant move to Argentina, joining Newell's Old Boys, a prominent club in the Argentine Primera División. This move was notable for a Bulgarian player at the time and he became a popular figure among the fans.
  • Columbus Crew (1999–2001): He continued his international career by joining Major League Soccer (MLS) side Columbus Crew in the United States. He was an influential player for the Crew during his spell in MLS.
  • Later Career: After his time with Columbus Crew, Yotov played for other North American clubs, including the Charleston Battery and Atlanta Silverbacks in the A-League (now USL Championship) before retiring from professional football.

International Career

Yotov represented the Bulgaria national football team, earning 7 caps. He was part of the highly successful Bulgarian squad for the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States, where the team famously reached the semi-finals. Although he did not make an appearance during the tournament, his inclusion reflected his standing as a talented forward in Bulgarian football.
