Vasile Soare is a Russian diplomat of Romanian descent, best known for his tenure as the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Romania from 2016 to 2023.
Early Life and Education Born in 1962 in the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic (part of the Soviet Union at the time, now Moldova), Vasile Soare has a Romanian ethnic background. He pursued higher education in the Soviet Union, graduating from the prestigious Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) in 1984.
Diplomatic Career Soare embarked on a career in the Soviet, and subsequently Russian, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His early diplomatic assignments included various positions within the central apparatus of the Ministry and abroad. Notably, he served in the Russian Embassy in Bucharest, Romania, on multiple occasions prior to his ambassadorship, including as a counsellor. His familiarity with Romania, its language, and its culture was a significant aspect of his diplomatic profile.
Ambassador to Romania (2016-2023) Vasile Soare was appointed Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Romania by presidential decree on April 15, 2016. During his seven-year tenure, he was a prominent figure in the bilateral relations between Russia and Romania, a period often marked by complex political dynamics and historical sensitivities. His responsibilities included representing Russia's interests, fostering diplomatic dialogue, and engaging with Romanian government officials, media, and civil society. Soare frequently communicated Russia's official positions on international issues, including the annexation of Crimea, the conflict in Ukraine, and NATO expansion, often through interviews and public statements. His role became particularly challenging following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, which significantly strained Russia-Romania relations. Soare's diplomatic mission concluded in October 2023, when he was recalled from his post.
