Vardahovit is a rural settlement located in the Vayots Dzor Province of the Republic of Armenia. It is administratively part of the Yeghegis municipal community.
Geography
Vardahovit is situated in the mountainous southeastern region of Armenia, within the Armenian Highlands. The village is located at a high elevation, characteristic of the Vayots Dzor province, which is known for its rugged terrain and deep river valleys.
History and Toponymy
The village was historically known as Gyulliduz (or Gyullidüz). Following the transition of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic toward independence, the settlement was officially renamed Vardahovit on January 25, 1991. The name is derived from the Armenian words vard (վարդ), meaning "rose," and hovit (հովիտ), meaning "valley."
Demographics and Economy
According to the 2011 census conducted by the Statistical Committee of the Republic of Armenia, the village had a permanent population of 103 residents. The population is predominantly Armenian. The local economy is primarily centered on subsistence and small-scale agriculture, with a focus on animal husbandry and mountain-based farming suited to the high-altitude climate.
Administration
As part of the administrative reforms in Armenia, Vardahovit was incorporated into the enlarged Yeghegis community, which serves as the local government body for several surrounding settlements in the region.
