Valle del Belice sheep

Overview
The Valle del Belice sheep is a domestic ovine breed originating from the Valle del Belice area in western Sicily, Italy. It is primarily raised for its milk, which is used in the production of regional cheeses, and to a lesser extent for meat. The breed is adapted to the Mediterranean climate and the pastoral systems of the Sicilian interior.

History
The breed developed in the Valle del Belice region through the cross‑breeding of local Sicilian sheep with imported Merino and other European dairy breeds during the 19th and early 20th centuries. This breeding strategy aimed to improve milk yield while retaining the hardiness of the autochthonous stock. The breed is listed by the Italian National Association of Sheep Breeders (Associazione Nazionale della Pastorizia) and is recognized by the Italian Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies (MIPAAF) as a distinct genetic resource.

Physical characteristics

  • Size: Mature rams typically weigh 70–85 kg and stand 80–90 cm at the withers; ewes weigh 55–70 kg and stand 70–80 cm.
  • Wool: The fleece is white, medium‑length, and moderately fine; it is primarily used for local hand‑spinning and weaving, although wool production is secondary to milk.
  • Head and face: The breed exhibits a white face without dark markings; ears are medium‑sized and held upright.
  • Reproductive traits: Ewes generally have a single lamb per year, with occasional twins under good nutritional conditions.

Milk production
Valle del Belice ewes produce 150–250 L of milk per lactation, with a relatively high protein (≈5.5 %) and fat (≈6 %) content compared to some other Italian dairy breeds. The milk is traditionally employed in the manufacture of Pecorino di Valtellina and other local cheeses.

Conservation status
According to the latest reports from the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, the breed is classified as “at risk” due to a limited and declining population, estimated at fewer than 5 000 breeding females. Conservation programs focus on preserving genetic diversity and supporting small‑scale pastoral farms in the Valle del Belice.

Management
The breed is typically raised in extensive or semi‑extensive systems, grazing on natural pasture and shrubland during the day and confined to simple shelters at night. Seasonal transhumance to higher pastures is practiced in some farms to exploit the mountain feed resources during the summer months.
