Zelepukin began his senior career in the Soviet Championship League with Khimik Voskresensk, CSKA Moscow and Ak Bars Kazan before being selected 221st overall by the New Jersey Devils in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft. He made his National Hockey League (NHL) debut in the 1991–92 season and went on to play for the New Jersey Devils, Edmonton Oilers, Philadelphia Flyers and Chicago Blackhawks over ten seasons (1991‑2001).
