Val-de-Scie

Val-de-Scie is a commune in the Seine‑Maritime department of the Normandy region in north‑western France. Established on 1 January 2019, the commune was created by the merger of the former communes of Auffay, Cressy, and Sévis.

Geography
The commune lies in the Pays de Caux, a rural area of Normandy, approximately 23 km south of Dieppe and 30 km north of Rouen. It is situated in the valley of the Scie River, a coastal watercourse that flows into the English Channel at Hautot‑sur‑Mer. The terrain ranges from 66 m to 172 m above sea level and covers a total area of 22.05 km². Val‑de‑Scie is part of the Rouen attraction area and belongs to the Caux‑Maritime employment zone.

History
The three constituent communes—Auffay, Cressy, and Sévis—initiated a merger process in 2017 to achieve economies of scale, maintain state funding, and avoid being forced into an unwanted inter‑communal arrangement. After Cropus withdrew from the proposed consolidation, the remaining three municipalities approved the merger, and the new commune of Val‑de‑Scie was formally created at the start of 2019. The former communes now function as delegated communes within the new administrative structure.

Administration
Val‑de‑Scie falls within the arrondissement of Dieppe and the canton of Luneray (following a 2020 decree that placed the whole commune in this canton). It is a member of the communauté de communes Terroir de Caux. The mayor for the 2020–2026 term is Christian Suronne. The commune’s INSEE code is 76034 and it uses the postal codes 76720 and 76850.

Demographics
According to the latest available figures (2023), Val‑de‑Scie has a population of 2 530 inhabitants, giving it a population density of roughly 115 inhabitants per km². The commune is classified by INSEE as a “rural town” (bourg rural) and is situated outside any urban unit.

Transport
Val‑de‑Scie is accessible via the national road N27 and the former N29 (now departmental road RD 929). The former railway station at Auffay, on the line between Malaunay‑Le Houlme and Dieppe, provides regular TER Normandie services linking the commune to Rouen and Dieppe.

Toponymy
The name “Val‑de‑Scie” refers to the commune’s location in the valley (“val”) of the Scie River.
