Vũ Quỳnh (1463 – 1516) was a Vietnamese Confucian scholar, court official, and literary figure of the Early Lê dynasty (Later Lê). He is most noted for his contributions to Vietnamese historiography and poetry, particularly his involvement in the compilation of the anthology Lĩnh Nam chích thi (林南集詩, “Selected Poems of Lĩnh Nam”) and his participation in the editing of the historical text Đại Việt sử ký toàn thư (《大越史記全書》, “Complete Annals of Đại Việt”).
Early life and education
Vũ Quỳnh was born in 1463 in what is now Thanh Hóa province. He passed the imperial examinations, attaining the degree of tiến sĩ (進士, “presented scholar”), which qualified him for appointment to the civil service. His education was rooted in the Confucian classics, and he was recognized for his literary talent and moral integrity.
Official career
Following his examination success, Vũ Quỳnh entered the bureaucracy of the Lê court, serving in various capacities including positions in the Ministry of Rites (Lễ bộ) and the Ministry of Personnel (Bộ biểu). His duties involved drafting edicts, overseeing examinations, and supervising scholarly projects sanctioned by the emperor.
Literary and historiographic work
-
Lĩnh Nam chích thi – Vũ Quỳnh, together with fellow scholars such as Lê Văn Trị, compiled this anthology in the late 15th century. The collection gathers poems composed by Vietnamese and Chinese‑influenced poets from the preceding centuries, illustrating the literary culture of the Lê period and preserving many works that would otherwise have been lost.
-
Đại Việt sử ký toàn thư – Vũ Quỳnh contributed to the editing and revision of this official chronicle, which was originally begun in the 15th century by Ngô Sĩ Liên. His role involved verifying source material, correcting transcriptions, and adding marginal notes, thereby enhancing the text’s reliability for later generations.
Later life and death
Vũ Quỳnh continued to serve the court until his death in 1516. He was posthumously honored with the title Thánh Hiếu (聖孝) for his moral virtues and scholarly accomplishments.
Legacy
Vũ Quỳnh’s work on Lĩnh Nam chích thi remains a primary source for the study of pre‑modern Vietnamese poetry and the cultural exchange between Vietnam and China. His contributions to the Đại Việt sử ký toàn thư are recognized as part of the historiographic tradition that shaped Vietnam’s national historical narrative. Modern Vietnamese scholarship frequently cites his editorial interventions when analyzing the transmission and preservation of early Vietnamese texts.
