Uzhhorod Raion

Definition
Uzhhorod Raion is an administrative district (raion) of Zakarpattia Oblast in western Ukraine. Its administrative center is the city of Uzhhorod, which is not part of the raion’s jurisdiction but serves as its seat.

Overview
Uzhhorod Raion occupies the southwestern part of Zakarpattian Oblast, bordering Slovakia to the west and Hungary to the southwest. The raion was substantially reorganised on 18 July 2020 as part of Ukraine’s nationwide administrative reform, which reduced the number of raions in the oblast and expanded Uzhhorod Raion’s territory by merging several former neighboring raions. The post‑reform area of the raion is approximately 2,040 km² (784 sq mi). According to estimates from the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, the raion’s population in 2022 was roughly 250,000 inhabitants, making it one of the more densely populated districts in the region.

Etymology / Origin
The name “Uzhhorod” combines the name of the Uzh River (Uzh), which flows through the area, with the Slavic word “horod” (also rendered “gorod”), meaning “town” or “city.” Consequently, “Uzhhorod Raion” can be understood as “the district surrounding the town on the Uzh River.”

Characteristics

  • Geography: The raion lies within the Carpathian foothills, featuring a mix of low mountains, river valleys, and fertile plains. The Uzh River, a tributary of the Tysa, traverses the district, providing water resources and shaping local settlement patterns.

  • Administrative Subdivisions: Following the 2020 reform, Uzhhorod Raion comprises numerous local hromadas (amalgamated territorial communities). These include urban hromadas (e.g., Velyka Dobron) and rural hromadas (e.g., Stavne, Nove Selo), each possessing its own local council.

  • Economy: The district’s economy is diversified, with agriculture (particularly grain, sugar beet, and livestock) playing a major role. Small‑scale manufacturing, food processing, and cross‑border trade with Slovakia and Hungary also contribute to the local GDP. Tourism, driven by the region’s natural scenery and cultural heritage, is a growing sector.

  • Transport: Uzhhorod Raion is served by a network of regional roads linking it to the city of Uzhhorod and to border checkpoints at Chop (rail) and various highway crossings. The main railway line connecting Kyiv with Chop runs through the raion, facilitating both passenger and freight movement.

  • Demographics: The population is ethnically mixed, with Ukrainians constituting the majority. Significant minorities include Hungarians, Slovaks, Romanians, and Rusyns, reflecting the historical multicultural character of Zakarpattia.

  • Education and Culture: The district hosts several secondary schools, technical colleges, and cultural institutions such as libraries and community centers. Folk traditions, particularly music and dance, are actively preserved in local festivals.
