Utraula

Utraula is a city and a municipal board (Nagar Palika Parishad) in Balrampur district in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. It is located approximately 90 kilometres from the border with Nepal and about 175 kilometres northeast of the state capital, Lucknow. The town is situated near the West Rapti River.

Geography

Utraula is one of nine blocks in Balrampur district, comprising 114 villages and 22,204 houses. The town itself is divided into 29 wards. It lies approximately 28.98 km from the district headquarters at Balrampur. Surrounding districts include Gonda (40.8 km), Shravasti (66.3 km), Siddharthnagar (66.78 km), and Sant Kabir Nagar (88.88 km). The elevation is approximately 96 metres (315 feet) above sea level.

Demographics

According to the 2011 Indian Census, Utraula had a population of 32,145. Males constitute approximately 76.2% and females 66.61% of the population. The average literacy rate is 67.68%, which is lower than the national average of 71.48%; male literacy is 61% and female literacy is 46%. About 14.52% of the population is under six years of age. Muslims constitute approximately 44.97% of the population, with the Muslim Khanzada forming a large part of the rural population.

Languages

The native languages spoken in Utraula are Awadhi, Hindi, and Urdu. Most residents speak Awadhi in daily life, while Hindi and Urdu are used for official communication.

Culture

Utraula is known for its agricultural economy, serving as a local trade hub for rice, wheat, and sugarcane. Film writer Haider Rizvi (from Rehra Maafi, Utraula) is a notable figure from the town, having written for Indian comedy shows such as The Great Indian Laughter Challenge and the feature films Siya and Bhool Chuk Maaf.

Governance

Utraula has a civil court judge's office, a Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) office, and a Sub Registrar Office. It is also an assembly constituency of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, one of five constituencies in the Gonda Lok Sabha constituency. The current Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) is Ram Pratap Verma.

Utraula has a bus station with connections to Gonda, Lucknow, Balrampur, Ayodhya, Faizabad, and Basti. The nearest airport is Shravasti Airport, approximately 45 km away. The nearest railway station is in Gainsari.

Etymology

According to some sources, the name "Utraula" may mean "a place of shelter" or "a resting place" in the local dialect, likely derived from Sanskrit roots, reflecting its historical significance as a stopover point for travelers and traders.
