University of Utah

The University of Utah (U of U) is a public research university located in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States. Established on February 28, 1850, as the University of Deseret, it was renamed the University of Utah in 1892 following the territory’s admission to statehood. The institution is the flagship campus of the Utah System of Higher Education and is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity."

Campus and Organization
The main campus occupies approximately 1,500 acres in the eastern foothills of the Wasatch Range. Additional facilities include the Health Sciences campus south of downtown Salt Lake City, the Utah State Agricultural Experiment Station, and several regional research sites. The university comprises twelve colleges and schools, covering disciplines such as engineering, business, law, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, arts and sciences, and health.

U of U offers over 200 undergraduate majors, 84 master's degree programs, and 61 doctoral programs. As of the 2023–2024 academic year, the university enrolls roughly 30,000 students, of which approximately 22,000 are undergraduates and 8,000 are graduate or professional students. The university’s athletic teams, known as the Utes, compete in the NCAA Division I Pac‑12 Conference.

Governance
The University of Utah is governed by a Board of Trustees appointed by the governor of Utah and confirmed by the state senate. The university’s chief executive officer is the president, who oversees academic affairs, financial management, and strategic planning. The current president (as of 2026) is an appointed academic leader with a background in both research administration and higher‑education policy.
