The University of Otago College of Education was a constituent college of the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand, existing from 1 January 2007 until its disestablishment on 1 January 2023. It was formed through the merger of the university with the Dunedin College of Education.
Formation and Structure Prior to the merger, the Dunedin College of Education operated as an independent teacher training institution with a history dating back to 1876. The merger was effected under the Education Act 1989 (later the Education and Training Act 2020) following a consultation process. Upon integration, the College became one of the University’s academic divisions, headed by a Pro-Vice-Chancellor. It was responsible for initial teacher education (ITE) programmes (early childhood, primary, and secondary), postgraduate education studies, and educational research.
Academic Focus The College delivered qualifications including the Bachelor of Teaching (BTchg), Graduate Diploma of Teaching, and various postgraduate certificates, diplomas, and master’s degrees. It housed research centres such as the National Centre for Teaching and Learning (NCTL) and the Educational Assessment Research Unit (EARU). It also managed the University’s practicum partnerships with schools and early childhood centres throughout the lower South Island.
Disestablishment and Restructuring In 2021, the University of Otago initiated a major structural reform (the "Future University" project) to consolidate its academic divisions. As a result, the College of Education was disestablished as a separate administrative division effective 1 January 2023. Its academic staff, programmes, and research centres were transferred primarily into the newly configured Division of Humanities, specifically within the School of Education. The Pro-Vice-Chancellor role for the College was disestablished, with academic leadership transitioning to a Dean of the School of Education reporting to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Humanities.
