Unicore (also styled as UNICORE, UniCore, or unicore) is a term with multiple established meanings across computing, technology, and commerce.
1. UNICORE (Grid Computing Middleware)
UNICORE (an acronym for UNIform Interface to COmputing REsources) is an open-source grid computing middleware technology developed in Germany. It enables seamless access to heterogeneous high-performance computing (HPC) resources such as supercomputers, cluster systems, and databases.
- History: Development began in 1997 for German supercomputer centers as an alternative to the Globus Toolkit. The first prototype emerged from the German UNICORE project, and the production version was refined in the follow-up UNICORE Plus project (completed in 2002).
- Architecture: Consists of three tiers — a user tier (clients such as the UNICORE Rich Client based on Eclipse, and the UNICORE command-line client), a server tier (Gateway for authentication, UNICORE/X for resource access), and a target system tier (Target System Interface, or TSI, which interfaces with the local OS and resource manager).
- Security: Uses permanent X.509 certificates for authentication, single sign-on, and signing of XML requests over SSL. Trust delegation uses signed SAML assertions; local authorization is controlled by XACML policies.
- Licensing: All components are open source under the BSD license, available via SourceForge.
- Usage: Deployed in European and international research infrastructures including PRACE, EGI, and the DEISA project. Used in production at supercomputer centers such as the John von Neumann Institute for Computing (NIC) to access systems like the IBM BlueGene/P "JUGENE" and the "JUROPA" cluster.
2. unicore (Adjective — Computer Hardware)
As a lowercase adjective, unicore (from uni- + core) describes a processor having only one core. It is used in contrast to multicore or dual-core processors.

UNICOR is the trade name for Federal Prison Industries (FPI), a wholly owned, self-sustaining U.S. government corporation that sells market-priced services and goods made by inmates. It functions as a correctional program to help inmates learn job skills for successful reentry into society.
