Ungheni District () is an administrative territorial unit (raion) located in the central part of the Republic of Moldova. The district is situated on the eastern bank of the Prut River, which forms the border with Romania, and is part of the historical region of Bessarabia.
Geography
- Area: Approximately 1,203 km² (463 sq mi).
- Borders: It borders the districts of Bălți, Nisporeni, Călărași, and Leova, as well as the Romanian county of Iași across the Prut River.
- Topography: The territory is characterized by rolling hills, fertile plains, and the riverine floodplains of the Prut.
Administrative Center
The city of Ungheni serves as the administrative centre of the district. Although the city is administratively separate as a municipality, it functions as the primary hub for governmental and economic activities in the district.
History
- The area has been inhabited since antiquity, with archaeological evidence of settlements dating to the Neolithic period.
- Throughout the medieval period, the region was part of the Principality of Moldavia.
- After the 1812 annexation by the Russian Empire, it became part of the Bessarabia Governorate.
- Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the modern administrative unit of Ungheni District was formally established on 22 January 2002 as part of Moldova’s territorial‑administrative reform, which reorganized the former “raions” and municipalities.
Demographics (based on the 2014 Moldovan Census)
- Population: 115,100 residents.
- Ethnic composition: Predominantly ethnic Moldovans/Romanians, with minorities of Ukrainians, Russians, Gagauz, and Roma.
- Urban vs. rural: The district is primarily rural; the majority of inhabitants live in villages, while the city of Ungheni accounts for the main urban population.
Economy
- Agriculture: The district’s economy is heavily reliant on agriculture, with major crops including wheat, corn, sunflowers, grapes, and vegetables. Livestock farming is also significant.
- Industry: Small‑scale manufacturing and processing facilities operate in and around Ungheni, focusing on food processing, textiles, and construction materials.
- Trade and transport: The Ungheni–Iași border crossing on the Prut River is a key international point of transit, facilitating trade between Moldova and Romania and, by extension, the European Union.
Infrastructure
- Transportation: The district is traversed by the European route E58 and the Moldovan railway line linking Chișinău with Iași, providing both road and rail connectivity.
- Education and health: There are multiple primary and secondary schools, a few vocational institutions, and a network of health centres; the city of Ungheni hosts a regional hospital.
Cultural and Natural Sites
- The district contains several historical churches and monuments dating to the 18th and 19th centuries.
- Natural attractions include the Prut River floodplain, which is a habitat for diverse bird species and is designated as a protected area under national conservation regulations.
