Unforgiven (Russian: Непрощённый, romanized: Neproshchennyy) is a 2018 Russian biographical drama film directed by Sarik Andreasyan, starring Dmitry Nagiyev as Vitaly Kaloyev. It was released on September 27, 2018.

Background

The film is based on the true story of the 2002 Überlingen mid-air collision, in which Bashkirian Airlines Flight 2937 and a DHL cargo plane collided over Überlingen, Germany, killing all 71 people aboard both aircraft, including the wife and two children of Vitaly Kaloyev.

Plot

Vitaly Kaloyev is an architect-engineer in Moscow who lives with his wife Svetlana and their two children, Konstantin and Diana. After being offered a project in Barcelona, he travels there alone while his family plans to join him later. His wife and children board Bashkirian Airlines Flight 2937, which collides mid-air with a DHL cargo plane over Überlingen. Kaloyev travels to the crash site and discovers the bodies of his wife and daughter.

Grieving and seeking accountability, Kaloyev attempts to meet with Peter Nielsen, the air traffic controller on duty at Skyguide at the time of the collision. After being denied a meeting and offered financial compensation instead, Kaloyev travels to Zürich, confronts Nielsen at his home, and fatally stabs him. Kaloyev is arrested, tried, and sentenced to prison. Upon his release, he returns to Moscow, where he is greeted as a hero by the public and press.
