Umrao Hospitals

Umrao Hospitals is a private, multi-speciality and tertiary care hospital located at Asmita Enclave in Mira Road, a northern suburb of Mumbai in Thane district, Maharashtra, India. It is operated under the Umrao Institute of Medical Science and Research (UMRAO), a trust established in 1990 by the late Syed Nazar Hussain.

Location

The hospital is situated in the eastern part of Mira Road, at the center of the Asmita Complex, close to the Mira Road railway station on the Western Railway line. It is connected by road to southern Mumbai as well as to the northern Vasai-Virar region.

History

The Umrao Hospitals was inaugurated on 1 November 2010 by Ghulam Nabi Azad, then Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare of the Government of India. During the inauguration, a foundation stone was also laid for the Umrao College of Nursing Education and the Asmita College of Architecture. The hospital was developed by the Asmita Group, a conglomerate involved in real estate, education, and healthcare.

In late 2014, the hospital's operations were entrusted to Wockhardt Hospitals, and the facility subsequently operated under Wockhardt management. The hospital has since been referred to in some listings as "Wockhardt Hospitals (formerly known as Umrao Hospital)."

Infrastructure and Services

The hospital is a 330-bed facility with an emergency department. It offers services across multiple specialties, including cardiology, oncology, orthopaedics, neurology, gastroenterology, critical care, and neonatal intensive care (NICU). The hospital has implemented a telemedicine facility and a Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), making it a filmless facility and enabling consultation with clinicians internationally.

Notably, the hospital installed video cameras on approximately 100 ICU beds for patient monitoring purposes. Hospital authorities stated that the cameras were intended to limit visitor presence in the wards, thereby reducing the risk of infection.

Community and Events

The hospital has conducted medical screening camps for various ailments in the community, including a cardiac screening camp for senior citizens held at Narsinh Govindrao Vartak High School in Virar. The Umrao Institute of Medical Science and Research has reported investing over ₹16 crore in healthcare and community initiatives, with outreach programs impacting more than 25,000 individuals.

Governance

The institution is currently led by Chairman Syed Muzaffar Hussain and Trustee Syed Mazhar Hussain, continuing the vision of its founder, the late Syed Nazar Hussain. The trust has announced plans to establish a world-class cancer institute to address oncology needs in the Mira-Bhayandar region and surrounding communities.
