Ullern is a borough of the city of Oslo, Norway. Located in the western part of the city, it is known for its residential areas, green spaces, and views over the Oslo Fjord.
Geography
Ullern borders the boroughs of Bærum to the west, Vestre Aker to the north, Frogner to the east, and Alna and Gamle Oslo across the Lysakerelva river and the fjord to the south. The borough covers an area of approximately 9.4 square kilometers (3.6 sq mi). Key geographical features include the valley of Lysakerelva, which forms its western boundary, and several hills and plateaus that offer varying topography.
History
Historically, Ullern was largely an agricultural area characterized by large farms. As Oslo expanded in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Ullern transformed into a residential area, particularly after the construction of the Holmenkoll Line (now part of the Oslo Metro) and the Skøyen-Smestad Line. Many of the old farm properties were parceled out for housing development, leading to the establishment of various neighborhoods within the borough. The borough was officially established as an administrative unit in 1988 as part of Oslo's municipal restructuring.
Demographics
As of recent statistics, Ullern has a population of over 30,000 residents. It is generally characterized by a mix of housing types, from single-family homes and semi-detached houses to apartment buildings, reflecting its development over time. The area is considered one of Oslo's more affluent boroughs.
Culture and Sport
Ullern is home to several cultural and recreational facilities. The most prominent sports club is Ullern Idrettsforening (Ullern IF), founded in 1909, which fields teams in various sports, including football, basketball, and handball. The borough also contains several parks and green areas, contributing to its residential appeal. Notable institutions include the Oslo University Hospital, Radiumhospitalet (The Norwegian Radium Hospital), a leading cancer treatment and research center.
Transportation
Ullern is well-served by public transportation. The Oslo Metro (T-bane) runs through the borough with stations such as Lysakerelven, Bjørnsletta, Åsjordet, and Ullernåsen. The Lysaker Station, a major transport hub for regional trains and buses, is located just on the western border of the borough. Additionally, several bus lines connect different parts of Ullern with the rest of Oslo. Major roads, including parts of the European route E18, pass through or along the borough's boundaries.
