Ulf Kirsten (born 4 December 1965) is a German former professional footballer who played as a striker. He is noted for his career with Dynamo Dresden in East Germany, Bayer Leverkusen in the unified German Bundesliga, and the Germany national team.
Early life and youth career
Kirsten was born in Riesa, East Germany. He began playing football with local youth clubs, eventually joining the youth academy of Dynamo Dresden, where he progressed to the senior team.
Club career
Dynamo Dresden (1983–1990)
Kirsten made his professional debut with Dynamo Dresden in the DDR‑Oberliga. Over seven seasons, he became the club’s leading scorer, winning the East German championship in 1989 and the FDGB‑Pokal (East German Cup) in 1986 and 1989. He scored 74 league goals in 124 appearances for Dresden.
Bayer Leverkusen (1990–2003)
Following German reunification, Kirsten transferred to Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga. He remained with Leverkusen for 13 seasons, scoring 182 league goals in 322 appearances. Kirsten helped the club reach the UEFA Cup final in 1996 (runner‑up) and the UEFA Champions League final in 2002 (runner‑up). He retired from professional play in 2003.
International career
East Germany (1985–1990)
Kirsten earned 49 caps for the East Germany national team, scoring 18 goals.
Germany (1992–2000)
After reunification, Kirsten was selected for the unified Germany national team, for which he made 51 appearances and scored 20 goals. He represented Germany at UEFA Euro 1996, where the team won the tournament, and at the 1998 FIFA World Cup. He retired from international football in 2000.
Playing style
Kirsten was known for his aerial ability, strong finishing, and positional sense inside the penalty area. He was proficient with both feet and effective in hold‑up play.
