The USS Stockdale (DE-399) was a John C. Butler-class destroyer escort built for the United States Navy during World War II. She was named for Vice Admiral John Stockdale, a posthumous recipient of the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Coral Sea.
The Stockdale was commissioned on January 16, 1944, and saw extensive service in the Pacific Theater, primarily in anti-submarine warfare and escort duty. She participated in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, providing vital protection for escort carriers and other vessels. Following the war, the Stockdale was decommissioned in 1946. She remained in reserve until she was struck from the Navy List in 1972 and subsequently sold for scrap.
The USS Stockdale (DE-399) earned several battle stars for her service during World War II. While not involved in any major fleet engagements after Leyte Gulf, her consistent performance in escorting convoys and hunting submarines contributed significantly to the Allied war effort. She represents a vital class of ship that provided necessary protection and logistical support in the vast Pacific theater.
