Tyrone Thompson (politician)

Odis Tyrone Thompson (September 30 1967 – May 4 2019) was an American politician who served as a Democratic member of the Nevada Assembly representing the 17th district from his appointment on April 16 2013 until his death in office on May 4 2019.

Early life and education
Thompson was born in North Las Vegas, Nevada. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Northern Arizona University and later obtained a graduate degree from the University of Phoenix.[1]

Career before elected office
Prior to entering the legislature, Thompson worked as the coordinator of homeless services for the Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition, focusing on housing and homelessness issues in the region.[1]

Legislative service
Thompson was appointed to the Nevada Assembly in April 2013 to fill the vacancy left by Steven Brooks. He subsequently won re‑election and served three full terms. During his tenure, he was noted for his advocacy on education, homelessness, and social services, and was often referred to by colleagues as a “longtime education advocate.” He chaired or served on several committees, including those related to health and human services.[2][3]

Death
Thompson died suddenly on May 4 2019 at the age of 51 while receiving emergency care in Carson City, Nevada. His death prompted statements of condolence from Nevada’s legislative leaders and the Democratic Party. He was succeeded in the Assembly by Kasina Douglass‑Boone.[4][5]
