Authority
The species was formally described in 1977 by the ichthyologists Paul H. Loiselle and Jacques Géry. The specific epithet pauliani honors the French entomologist René Paulian, who contributed to the study of Madagascar’s cave fauna.

Description
Typhleotris pauliani is a troglobitic (cave‑dwelling) fish exhibiting typical adaptations to a subterranean habitat:
- Morphology – An elongated, laterally compressed body reaching up to approximately 50 mm in standard length.
- Pigmentation – The skin is unpigmented, appearing translucent or pale.
- Eyes – Eyes are highly reduced and covered by skin; functional vision is absent.
- Sensory structures – Enhanced lateral line system and heightened mechanoreceptive pores aid navigation in darkness.
Distribution and habitat
The species is endemic to the island of Madagascar. It inhabits the groundwater systems of karstic limestone formations in the southwestern part of the island, particularly within the underground streams and pools of the Ankarana and Bemaraha massifs. Specimens have been collected from submerged cave passages accessed via sinkholes and fissures.
Ecology
- Diet – Likely consists of small invertebrates such as amphipods, isopods, and copepods that inhabit the same subterranean waters.
- Reproduction – Little is documented; like many cave fishes, it is presumed to have a low reproductive rate with small clutch sizes.
Conservation status
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has evaluated Typhleotris pauliani. As of the latest assessment, the species is listed as Endangered due to its extremely limited distribution, specialized habitat, and threats from groundwater extraction, habitat degradation, and pollution.
