Tylototriton shanorum

Tylototriton shanorum is a species of newt in the family Salamandridae, endemic to Shan State in central Myanmar. It was first described in 2014 by Nishikawa, Matsui, and Rao based on specimens collected near Taunggyi.

Taxonomy and Description The species belongs to the genus Tylototriton (commonly known as crocodile newts) and the subgenus Tylototriton. It is a medium- to large-sized salamander with a stout body, a hexagonal head, weakly protruding dorsolateral bony ridges on the head, a narrow and weakly segmented vertebral ridge, and narrow vomerine tooth series. It is distinguished from congeners by its dull-colored markings.

Distribution and Habitat The species is recorded from Taunggyi, Nyaungshwe, Kalaw, and Pindaya townships in Shan State, Myanmar. Subsequent surveys have expanded its known range to include areas such as Baw Hseng in He Hoe, La-mine Village, Thar-mine-khem Dam in Aungpan, Taung Paw Gyi Village, and Lindley.

Conservation Status Tylototriton shanorum is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (2017 assessment). The primary threats to this species are not fully detailed, but habitat loss and degradation are likely concerns given its restricted range.

Taxonomic Notes Tylototriton ngarsuensis Grismer et al., 2018, has been considered a synonym of T. shanorum by some authorities, though the taxonomic relationship between the two has been reassessed using mitochondrial DNA and genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism data.
