Tylothrips

Tylothrips is a genus of insects belonging to the family Phlaeothripidae within the order Thysanoptera, commonly known as thrips. Members of this genus are classified under the subfamily Phlaeothripinae and are primarily found in leaf litter, on dead branches, or associated with decaying vegetation.

Taxonomy and Classification

The genus Tylothrips was established by the American entomologist J. Douglas Hood in 1937. It is situated within the tribe Glyptothripini. The genus includes several recognized species distributed across different geographical regions, with a significant presence in the New World, particularly in North and Central America. Examples of species within the genus include Tylothrips osborni and Tylothrips crassicornis.

Morphology

Species of Tylothrips exhibit the characteristic physical traits of the family Phlaeothripidae, most notably a tube-like terminal abdominal segment (the tenth segment). They are typically small, dark-colored insects. Specific identification of the genus often relies on the structure of the antennae—specifically the shape and number of segments—as well as the arrangement and length of specialized hairs (setae) on the head, pronotum, and wings.

Ecology and Behavior

Like many other genera in the Phlaeothripinae subfamily, Tylothrips species are generally considered to be mycophagous. They typically inhabit environments rich in organic matter, such as forest floor leaf litter or dead wood, where they feed on fungal spores or hyphae. Because they reside in cryptic habitats and have specialized dietary requirements, they are less commonly encountered by the public than the flower-dwelling or agricultural pest species of thrips found in other families.

Distribution

While research on the genus is specialized, documented occurrences indicate a distribution that includes various temperate and tropical regions. They are often collected using Berlese funnels or similar extraction methods designed to sample microarthropods from soil and litter samples.
