Tygh Valley is an unincorporated community and census‑designated place (CDP) located in Wasco County, in the state of Oregon, United States.
Overview
Tygh Valley lies in the northwestern part of the Columbia River Plateau, approximately 9 miles east of The Dalles and 6 miles west of the historic town of Tygh Valley. The community is situated along U.S. Route 197, which connects The Dalles to the central Oregon towns of Maupin and Madras. According to the 2020 United States Census, the Tygh Valley CDP had a population of roughly 1,000 residents. The local economy is primarily based on agriculture, livestock herding, and tourism associated with the nearby Columbia River Gorge and the historic Columbia River Highway.
Etymology/Origin
The name “Tygh” originates from the Tygh people, a band of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs who historically inhabited the area along the Tygh and Deschutes Rivers. The valley and the adjacent Tygh River both bear this name, reflecting the indigenous heritage of the region.
