Twink (musician)

Twink, born John Charles Alder (born 29 November 1944), is an English drummer, singer, and songwriter. He is primarily known for his involvement in the British psychedelic rock and proto-punk scenes of the late 1960s and early 1970s. His stage name "Twink" was adopted early in his career.

Career

Twink began his musical career in the mid-1960s. His most significant contributions to music history include his work with several influential bands:

  • The Fairies: An early mod-beat band from the Cambridge area, where he first gained attention as a drummer.
  • Tomorrow: A prominent psychedelic rock band formed in 1967. Twink was the drummer for the group, which also featured lead singer Keith West and guitarist Steve Howe (later of Yes). Tomorrow released one self-titled album in 1968 and is remembered for its innovative psychedelic sound and live performances.
  • The Pretty Things: After Tomorrow disbanded, Twink joined this long-standing British rhythm and blues and psychedelic rock band in 1969. He played drums on their critically acclaimed album S.F. Sorrow, which is often cited as one of the first rock operas.
  • Pink Fairies: In 1970, Twink co-founded the Pink Fairies, a notable band in the British underground scene known for their free-form, counter-cultural approach to music. They were closely associated with the Ladbroke Grove commune and released several albums, including Neverneverland (1971) and What a Bunch of Sweeties (1972), with Twink on drums and vocals.

Solo Work

In addition to his band activities, Twink released his debut solo album, Think Pink, in 1970. This album is a highly regarded work of British psychedelia, featuring contributions from members of The Pretty Things and The Deviants. He continued to release solo material and collaborate with various artists throughout his career, often maintaining his distinctive psychedelic and experimental style.

Legacy

Twink is recognized as a key figure in the British psychedelic and underground rock movements. His drumming style and songwriting contributions helped shape the sound of several seminal bands, leaving a lasting impact on subsequent generations of musicians in the psychedelic, punk, and alternative rock genres.
