Tusiata Avia (born 1977) is a New Zealand poet, playwright, and performance artist of Samoan descent. She is recognized for her contributions to contemporary Pacific literature and for addressing themes of identity, colonisation, and social justice in her work.
Early life and education
Avia was born in Christchurch, New Zealand, to Samoan parents who had migrated to the country. She grew up in South Auckland, where she began writing poetry and performing spoken word. She later completed a Master of Arts in Creative Writing at Victoria University of Wellington.

Avia's poetry collections include:
- The Savage Coloniser (2013) – a debut collection that combines poetry, prose, and performance elements to explore the impacts of colonial history on Pacific peoples.
- The Whole of the World (2021) – a collection that expands on her earlier themes while incorporating reflections on motherhood, community, and resilience.
