Description
Turbonilla emertoni is a very small marine gastropod, belonging to the pyrams (family Pyramidellidae). The shell is slender, elongate‑conic, and typically reaches lengths of 3–5 mm. It possesses numerous whorls (usually 8–10) with fine axial ribs and faint spiral striations. The aperture is oval, and the outer lip is thin. The coloration is generally translucent to whitish, sometimes with a faint brownish tint on the apex.
Distribution and Habitat
- Geographic range: Northwestern Atlantic Ocean, most notably recorded from the Gulf of Maine, Nova Scotia, and adjacent New England waters.
- Depth range: Found from the intertidal zone down to approximately 150 m, inhabiting soft substrates such as sand and muddy sand.
Ecology
Members of Pyramidellidae are ectoparasitic or kleptoparasitic, typically feeding on the bodily fluids of other invertebrates (e.g., polychaetes or bivalves) using a specialized proboscis. Specific host relationships for T. emertoni have not been documented in the literature.
Taxonomic Notes
The species was first described by Addison Emery Verrill in 1882 under the name Chemnitzia emertoni. Subsequent revisions of Pyramidellidae taxonomy transferred it to the genus Turbonilla. The original description and type locality are cited in Verrill’s 1882 publication on New England marine mollusks.
