Turbinidae is a family of marine gastropod mollusks commonly referred to as turban snails. The family is placed within the superfamily Trochoidea and comprises several subfamilies, the most widely recognized being Turbininae and Angariinae. Morphological Description
Members of Turbinidae possess robust, often globular to conical shells that typically range from 2 cm to over 10 cm in maximum dimension. The shells are frequently covered by a thick, calcareous operculum that is spiral and multispiral in form. The exterior surface may show axial ribs, spiral cords, or a combination thereof, and is commonly covered by a periostracum that can be matte or glossy. The interior of the shell is typically nacreous (mother‑of‑pearl), reflecting iridescent colors. The animal’s soft body includes a well‑developed head with cephalic tentacles, a muscular foot, and a radula adapted for grazing.

Distribution and Habitat
Turbinidae species are distributed worldwide, with highest diversity in tropical and subtropical marine environments. They inhabit a range of habitats from the intertidal zone to subtidal rocky reefs, seagrass beds, and occasionally deeper continental shelf waters (up to ~200 m). Geographic hotspots include the Indo‑West Pacific, the Caribbean, and the eastern Atlantic coasts.

Ecology and Life History
Turban snails are primarily herbivorous grazers, feeding on microalgae, diatoms, and biofilm scraped from hard substrates using their radula. Some larger species may also consume macroalgae. Reproduction is generally broadcast spawning, with separate male and female individuals releasing gametes into the water column. Development includes a planktonic larval stage (trochophore followed by veliger) that eventually settles and metamorphoses into the benthic adult form. Longevity varies among species; some large Turbinidae can live for several years.

Economic and Cultural Significance
Several turban snail species are harvested for human consumption, especially in coastal communities of the Indo‑Pacific and the Caribbean. Their thick, nacreous shells are a source of mother‑of‑pearl used in jewelry, inlays, and decorative objects. The commercial importance of Turbinidae has prompted regulated fisheries in some regions to mitigate overharvesting.

Conservation Status
While many Turbinidae species are listed as “Least Concern” by the IUCN Red List, localized threats—such as habitat loss from coastal development, pollution, and unsustainable collection—affect certain populations. Species with restricted ranges or those heavily exploited for food or ornamental shells may be subject to conservation measures, including size limits, seasonal closures, or protected areas.

Fossil Record
Turbinidae has a substantial fossil record extending from the Cretaceous to the present, providing insights into the evolutionary history of vetigastropods. Fossil shells retain characteristic features such as the thick operculum and nacreous interior, aiding paleontological identification.
