The Tung Chung line is a rapid transit line of the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) system in Hong Kong. It connects the urban area of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon with the new town of Tung Chung on Lantau Island, and provides direct access to Hong Kong International Airport via the Airport Express interchange at Hong Kong station.
Route and stations
The line runs wholly underground from Hong Kong station (interchange with the Island line, Tsuen Wan line, and Airport Express) to Tung Chung station, covering a distance of approximately 11.3 km. The stations, in order from east to west, are:

- Austin (formerly known as West Point) – opened 2022
- Nam Cheong
- Yau Wai
- Sunny Bay
- Tung Chung
History
- Planning for a rail link to Lantau Island began in the 1990s to support the development of the new town of Tung Chung and the associated Airport Core Programme.
- Construction commenced in 1995, and the line entered service on 22 June 1998, coinciding with the opening of the new Hong Kong International Airport.
- The line’s original purpose was to provide rapid access between the airport and the city centre; however, the dedicated Airport Express now serves that function, while the Tung Chung line serves local commuters and residents of Tung Chung and the surrounding areas.

- Track gauge: 1,435 mm (standard gauge)
- Electrification: 1,500 V DC overhead line
- Maximum operating speed: 80 km/h (approximately 50 mph)
- Signalling: Automatic Train Protection (ATC) with moving‑block technology, allowing headways of around 2 minutes during peak periods.
Rolling stock
The line utilizes MTR’s C‑stock electric multiple units, which were originally built for the Airport Express and later re‑allocated to the Tung Chung line after refurbishment. These trains feature longitudinal seating, air‑conditioning, and onboard passenger information systems.
Ridership
Since its opening, the Tung Chung line has experienced steady growth in passenger numbers, reflecting the expansion of the Tung Chung new town and increased residential development on Lantau Island. As of the latest available data (2023), average weekday ridership exceeds 150,000 entries and exits.
Future developments
Plans have been discussed to further extend the line eastward to connect with the proposed Hong Kong–Shenzhen Western Express Railway, though no definitive project timelines have been confirmed.
