Definition
Tung Chung Terminal is a transportation hub located in the Tung Chung area on Lantau Island, Hong Kong. It comprises the southern terminus of the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) Tung Chung line and an adjoining public bus terminus that provides local and regional services.
Overview
The terminal serves as a key interchange point for residents of the new town of Tung Chung, visitors to Hong Kong Disneyland, and passengers traveling to and from Hong Kong International Airport via the Airport Express and various bus routes. The MTR station opened on 22 June 1998 as part of the Airport Core Programme, extending rapid rail service to Lantau Island. The adjacent bus terminus accommodates a network of franchised and public bus routes that connect Tung Chung with other parts of Lantau, the airport, and the New Territories.
Etymology/Origin
The name “Tung Chung” (東涌) is derived from Cantonese, where “Tung” (東) means “east” and “Chung” (涌) historically referred to a stream or a water inlet. The area was originally a coastal village and later developed into a planned new town in the 1990s, prompting the construction of the terminal facilities.
