Truck (rigging)

A truck is a component of a rigging system, most commonly referring to the rotating wooden or metal platform mounted at the apex of a ship’s mast, or to similar devices used in various forms of rope or cable work, including theatrical and crane rigging. The term is employed in multiple disciplines where a fixed but rotatable support is required for the attachment, manipulation, or distribution of loads.

Sailing

In traditional sailing vessels, the truck denotes the topmost portion of a mast, consisting of a short horizontal timber or metal beam (the “truck” or “truckhead”) that serves as a bearing surface for the halyard sheaves and the point from which the topmast and topgallant mast are stepped. The truck may be equipped with a “truck cap” or “truck hoop” to secure the halyards and to prevent wear. Its primary function is to provide a level, rotating platform that allows the yardarms and sails to be hoisted, lowered, and adjusted while the vessel is under sail. The design of the truck evolved with the transition from wooden to iron and steel masts, but its essential purpose remained consistent.

Theatrical and Stage Rigging

In theatre and stage production, a truck refers to a mobile, wheeled platform or carriage that is incorporated into the rigging system to move scenery, lighting trusses, or other equipment along a predetermined path. These trucks are typically mounted on tracks or guided rails and can be powered manually, pneumatically, or electrically. They enable rapid scene changes and precise positioning of large set pieces, contributing to the efficiency of live performance logistics.

Cranes and Lifting Equipment

Within crane and lifting contexts, the term truck can denote the wheeled chassis of a mobile crane or the rotating turntable that supports the boom. In some rigging manuals, a “truck” may also describe the rotating bearing assembly at the top of a tower crane, allowing the jib to swivel horizontally. This component is engineered to bear substantial vertical and torsional loads while providing smooth rotational motion.

Etymology

The word “truck” in these contexts derives from the Middle English truk or troken, meaning a small, rotating or revolving device, and is related to the Old Norse trukka (“wheel”). Over time, the term was adopted in nautical vernacular to describe the rotating head of a mast, and subsequently extended metaphorically to similar rotating or mobile support structures in other fields.

Design Considerations

Across its applications, a truck must accommodate:

  • Structural integrity to support static and dynamic loads.
  • Rotational freedom, often facilitated by bearings, greased bushings, or low‑friction surfaces.
  • Resistance to environmental factors such as moisture (in maritime settings), temperature fluctuations, and mechanical wear.
  • Compatibility with associated rigging components, such as sheaves, blocks, and pulley systems.
