Trong Gewog

Trong Gewog is an administrative division (gewog) located in the Zhemgang District (Dzongkhag) of south-central Bhutan. It serves as a primary administrative and cultural center for the district, housing the district headquarters and the Zhemgang Dzong.

Geography

Trong Gewog is situated in the central portion of the Zhemgang District. It shares borders with several other gewogs: Shingkhar to the north, Bardo to the east, and Nangkor to the west and south. The terrain is characterized by the rugged, mountainous topography typical of the Bhutanese Himalayas, with significant portions of the land covered by subtropical and temperate forests.

Administration

As a local government unit, Trong Gewog is governed by a Gewog Tshogde, which is headed by an elected official known as a Gup. The gewog is subdivided into several chiwogs (election precincts or village groups). Notably, Trong Gewog encompasses the town of Zhemgang and the Zhemgang Dzong, a 17th-century fortress that serves as the religious and secular administrative center for the entire district.

Demographics and Economy

The population of Trong Gewog is distributed across various rural settlements and the urbanized area of Zhemgang town. The primary language spoken in the region is Khengkha.

The local economy is predominantly agrarian. Residents engage in subsistence and commercial farming, with major crops including maize, rice, and citrus fruits (particularly oranges). Livestock rearing is also a significant component of the local livelihood. Due to the high percentage of forest cover in the region, the gewog is part of a broader ecological landscape that supports various endangered species and contributes to Bhutan's conservation efforts.

Infrastructure

Compared to more remote gewogs in the district, Trong Gewog has relatively developed infrastructure due to its proximity to the district capital. It is connected to the national road network and contains essential public services, including the Zhemgang Central School and the district hospital. The area is also known for traditional crafts, particularly bamboo and cane work, which are characteristic of the Kheng region.
