Troll 2 is a 2025 Norwegian monster film directed by Roar Uthaug and written by Espen Aukan. It is the sequel to the 2022 Netflix film Troll and was produced by Motion Blur, with Espen Horn and Kristian Strand Sinkerud serving as producers. Production
Development on Troll 2 began after Netflix commissioned a sequel to the original film. Principal photography commenced in 2024, with Uthaug and Aukan returning as director and screenwriter, respectively. The film was shot in multiple locations, including Trondheim, Pilgrimsleden, Maridalen in Oslo, Jotunheimen, Rjukan, Hemsedal, and Budapest. Notable filming sites include the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim and Vemork in Rjukan. Troll 2 has been described as the largest film production ever undertaken in the Nordic countries. A teaser trailer was revealed in January 2025.
Release and Reception
Troll 2 was released on Netflix on December 1, 2025, with a running time of approximately 105 minutes. The film received mixed reviews from critics. On the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, 61% of 18 critics' reviews were positive, with an average rating of 5.8/10. Simon Abrams of RogerEbert.com gave the film two out of four stars, writing that, unlike its predecessor, Troll 2 "doesn't have enough canned dramatic or comedic incidents to make it seem particularly eventful." Other critics offered more favorable assessments, with Variety's review noting that Uthaug "sells the script's occasionally groan-worthy clichés with humor and smart pacing."
Plot Summary
The film opens with Tobias Tidemann telling his daughter Nora the story of how humans and trolls once lived in harmony, until King Olaf forced most of Norway's trolls into sunlight and imprisoned the Troll King and his offspring underground. Thirty years later, Nora lives in seclusion after her earlier encounter with the Troll King. She is recruited by Andreas to investigate a hibernating troll codenamed "Jotun" housed in a secret underground facility at Vemork. Jotun is accidentally awakened and escapes, prompting a military operation led by Major Kris Holm. The team eventually discovers that Jotun is following an ancient pilgrimage route to Trondheim. There, they uncover King Olaf's hidden tomb in Nidaros Cathedral, which reveals that Olaf had intended to grant trolls a sanctuary before being killed on the Church's orders. The film culminates in a battle between Jotun and Beautiful, in which Andreas sacrifices himself to wound Jotun, allowing Beautiful to kill the creature. A mid-credits scene shows Professor Møller secretly studying a baby troll grown from one of Jotun's genetic samples.
