Taxonomy
- Family: Fabaceae (legume family)
- Genus: Trifolium
- Species: Trifolium wormskioldii Hook.
- Authority: Described by William Jackson Hooker in 1835.
- Etymology: The specific epithet honors Danish botanist and explorer Morten Wormskjold (1783–1859).
Description
Trifolium wormskioldii is a perennial herbaceous plant. It typically attains heights of 10–30 cm. The plant exhibits the characteristic trifoliate leaf arrangement of the genus, with each leaf composed of three ovate leaflets bearing fine, often toothed margins. The inflorescence is a dense, cylindrical to globular head of pink to purplish flowers, each flower possessing a standard, wings, and keel typical of Fabaceae. Blooming generally occurs from late spring through early summer.
Distribution and Habitat
The species is native to western North America. Its range extends from southern Alaska and British Columbia southward through Washington, Oregon, and into northern and central California. It is commonly found in moist habitats such as stream banks, wet meadows, forest edges, and low-elevation sagebrush-steppe ecotones.
Ecology
As a member of the legume family, T. wormskioldii forms symbiotic associations with nitrogen‑fixing rhizobia, contributing to soil fertility. The flowers attract a variety of pollinators, including native bees and butterflies. The foliage provides forage for grazing mammals, though it is not a major agricultural crop.
Conservation Status
NatureServe and regional conservation assessments list Trifolium wormskioldii as G5 (Secure) across most of its range, indicating that the species is widespread, abundant, and not currently at risk of extinction. Localized threats may include habitat loss due to development, drainage of wet meadows, and competition from invasive plant species.
Uses
There are no significant commercial uses recorded for T. wormskioldii. It may be utilized in native plant restoration projects and for providing pollinator resources in habitat‑enhancement schemes.
