Howard Samuel "Trey" Thompkins IV (born May 29, 1990) is an American professional basketball player for Real Madrid of the Spanish Liga ACB and the EuroLeague. Standing at 2.08 m (6 ft 10 in), he plays primarily at the power forward position, but can also play small forward.
Early Life and College Career
Thompkins was born in Lithonia, Georgia, and attended Wesleyan School in Peachtree Corners, Georgia, where he was a highly touted prospect. He then played college basketball for the University of Georgia Bulldogs from 2008 to 2011. During his three seasons at Georgia, he averaged 14.6 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game, earning All-SEC honors multiple times. He declared for the NBA draft after his junior year.
Professional Career
NBA Career (2011–2013)
Thompkins was selected by the Los Angeles Clippers with the 37th overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft. He spent two seasons with the Clippers, primarily coming off the bench. In his rookie season (2011–12), he played in 24 games, averaging 2.6 points and 1.0 rebounds. His second season (2012–13) was marred by injuries, limiting him to just 7 games. He was eventually waived by the Clippers in March 2013.
European Career (2014–present)
After recovering from injuries, Thompkins moved to Europe to continue his career.
BC Nizhny Novgorod (2014–2015)
In 2014, he signed with Russian club BC Nizhny Novgorod, competing in both the VTB United League and the EuroLeague. He quickly established himself as a key player, averaging 14.5 points and 8.2 rebounds in 24 EuroLeague games, leading the team to the playoffs.
Real Madrid (2015–present)
In 2015, Thompkins joined Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid, one of Europe's most successful clubs. He has since become a long-serving and integral part of the team's success. With Real Madrid, he has won numerous titles:
