Founding and editorial history
The journal was launched in 2008 following a proposal submitted to Routledge in 2006. Its founding editors were Kate Sturge (Aston University) and Michaela Wolf (University of Graz), who guided the journal through its first years and shaped its interdisciplinary scope. Valerie Henitiuk became editor-in-chief in 2012, with Carol O'Sullivan and Red Chan as associate editors; Piotr Blumczyński joined as associate editor in 2015. Carol O'Sullivan succeeded Henitiuk as editor-in-chief in 2017, and Piotr Blumczyński (Queen's University Belfast) became editor-in-chief in 2019. Associate editors reported in the 2020s have included Sharon Deane-Cox, Tong King Lee, Myriam Salama-Carr and Binghan Zheng, with Bei Hu as Book Reviews Editor.
Scope and content
The journal's stated aim is to extend the methodologies, areas of interest and conceptual frameworks within translation studies while testing the traditional boundaries of the notion of "translation." It publishes original research articles, commissioned book reviews and shorter forum responses, and issues occasional themed or special issues (for example, on translation in India, media paratexts and translation, and artificial intelligence and translation). All submissions are in English, and manuscripts undergo editorial screening followed by double-anonymized peer review by at least two referees.
Abstracting and indexing
The journal is abstracted and indexed in services including the Arts & Humanities Citation Index, Current Contents/Social & Behavioral Sciences, Current Contents/Arts & Humanities, EBSCO databases, Linguistic Abstracts Online, the MLA International Bibliography and the Social Sciences Citation Index. According to the Journal Citation Reports, its 2019 impact factor was 0.947. More recent figures reported by the publisher and bibliometric services (for example, an impact factor of 1.2 and a Scopus CiteScore of 2.3 for 2024) have been cited in secondary sources; these later values should be regarded as publisher- and index-reported rather than independently confirmed here.
Significance
Translation Studies is one of the more prominent English-language journals dedicated specifically to translation studies, alongside longer-established titles such as Target and Meta. Commentators have noted its role in fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and in publishing work associated with concepts such as the "translational turn" in the humanities and "cultural translation."
