Trà Ôn district

Trà Ôn is a rural district (huyện) of Vĩnh Long province in the Mekong Delta region of southern Vietnam. The district capital is the township of Trà Ôn.

Geography
Trà Ôn district lies in the southern part of Vĩnh Long province, bordering the Tiền River to the north and the Hàm Luông River to the east. Its terrain is predominantly low‑lying floodplain typical of the Mekong Delta, with an extensive network of canals and rice paddies. The district covers an area of approximately 258 km² (100 sq mi).

Administrative divisions
The district is subdivided into one township (the district capital, Trà Ôn) and several rural communes (xã), including:

  • An Thới
  • Bảo Thạnh
  • Hòa Phú
  • Hòa Thạnh
  • Lý Nhơn
  • Thới Hòa
  • Trà Cú
  • Trà Ninh
  • Trà Ôn

(Exact numbers of communes may vary with administrative reforms; the list reflects the most recent publicly available data.)

Demographics
According to the General Statistics Office of Vietnam, the district had a population of about 140,000 people in the early 2000s. More recent census figures indicate a continuing modest growth, though precise numbers are not currently published in widely accessible sources.

Economy
Agriculture dominates the local economy. Trà Ôn is particularly noted for the cultivation of pomelo (bưởi), a citrus fruit for which the district is a major producer in the Mekong Delta. Other important agricultural products include rice, honey, and various aquaculture species cultivated in the district’s canals and ponds. Small‑scale trade and services are concentrated in the district capital and surrounding market towns.

Transportation
The district is connected to the provincial capital Vĩnh Long and other parts of the delta by a network of provincial roads and waterways. River transport remains an important mode of movement for goods and passengers, especially for agricultural produce.

Education and health
Trà Ôn hosts a number of primary and secondary schools administered by the provincial Department of Education and Training. Health services are provided by the district health center in Trà Ôn township, complemented by commune health stations throughout the district.

Culture
Local cultural activities often center around agricultural festivals, especially those celebrating the pomelo harvest. Traditional music, dance, and cuisine reflect the broader cultural patterns of the Mekong Delta.
