Definition
Touquin Aerodrome was a temporary military airfield located near the commune of Touquin in the Seine-et-Marne department of north‑central France. It was established during the First World War to support aerial operations of the French Air Service and the United States Army Air Service.
Overview
The aerodrome was situated approximately 5 km southeast of the town of Touquin, close to the Marne River valley. Constructed in late 1917, it served as a forward operating base for reconnaissance, observation, and limited fighter missions during the latter phases of the 1918 German spring offensive and the Allied counter‑offensives that followed. Units based at Touquin included elements of the French Escadrilles de Bombardement and the American 1st Aero Squadron (later redesignated as the 1st Observation Group). The aerodrome was decommissioned shortly after the armistice in November 1918, and the site reverted to agricultural use.
Etymology/Origin
The name “Touquin Aerodrome” derives directly from the nearby village of Touquin, which historically dates to the medieval period. In French military nomenclature of the era, temporary airfields were commonly named after the closest settlement.
