Toramus

Toramus is a genus of pleasing fungus beetles in the family Erotylidae. The genus was established by the French entomologist Antoine Henri Grouvelle in 1916.

Taxonomy

Toramus belongs to the following taxonomic hierarchy:

  • Kingdom: Animalia
  • Phylum: Arthropoda
  • Class: Insecta
  • Order: Coleoptera (beetles)
  • Family: Erotylidae (pleasing fungus beetles)
  • Subfamily: Cryptophilinae (or Languriinae, depending on classification)
  • Tribe: Toramini
  • Genus: Toramus Grouvelle, 1916

The genus is the type genus of the tribe Toramini, established by Sen Gupta in 1967.

Species

There are approximately nine described species in the genus Toramus:

  • Toramus acutus (Reitter, 1875)
  • Toramus bisignatus (Horn, 1895)
  • Toramus chamaeropis (Schaeffer, 1904)
  • Toramus formosianus (Grouvelle, 1913)
  • Toramus hirtellus (Schwarz, 1878)
  • Toramus obsoletus (Casey, 1900)
  • Toramus pulchellus (LeConte, 1863)
  • Toramus quadrinotatus (Casey, 1924)
  • Toramus ventricosus (Casey, 1924)

Some sources also list Toramus pilifer as an additional species.

Description and Ecology

Members of Toramus are small beetles associated with fungal habitats, consistent with the ecology of the family Erotylidae (pleasing fungus beetles). Specific diagnostic features for the genus are not extensively documented in widely available sources.

Distribution

The genus is primarily found in North America, with records from the United States (including Vermont) and Mexico. Toramus formosianus is recorded from Taiwan (formerly Formosa, from which its specific epithet derives). Some records also exist from Sweden, which may represent introduced populations or misidentifications.

Taxonomic History

The oldest described species in the genus, Toramus pulchellus, was originally described by John Lawrence LeConte in 1863, though the genus itself was not established until Grouvelle's 1916 work. The genus was historically placed within the family Languriidae, which has since been subsumed into Erotylidae. An obsolete synonym for the genus is Tomarus LeConte, 1861.
