Definition
Toots Deville (February 19, 1950 – August 19, 2004) was an American model, personal manager, and the wife of musician Willy DeVille. She is noted for her involvement with the 1970s punk‑rock band Mink DeVille, her work in rock‑magazine modeling, and her influence on the New York City music scene of that era.
Overview
Born Susan Berle in Monticello, New York, Deville was adopted by a wealthy Jewish couple from South Carolina and raised in Stamford, Connecticut. After a tumultuous youth that included drug experimentation and early marriage, she met Willy DeVille—then William Borsey—while both lived in Stamford. The couple married in 1971 and relocated to New York City’s East Village, where DeVille’s band Mink DeVille became the house band at CBGB from 1975 to 1978.
Deville managed many aspects of her husband’s early career, organized tours, and contributed to the band’s visual presentation, including costume design and album artwork. She also posed for rock magazines such as Creem, gaining a reputation for a flamboyant style that featured a beehive hairstyle, a nose ring, and shoulder tattoos.
After divorcing Willy DeVille in 1984, she left the music business, remarried Stephen Martincak, and worked in health‑care in upstate New York. She died of cancer in Monticello at age 54.
