Tongnan, Chongqing

Definition
Tongnan (Tongnan District) is an administrative district of the direct‑controlled municipality of Chongqing, People's Republic of China. It is situated in the southwestern part of Chongqing and shares a border with Sichuan Province.

Overview
Tongnan District covers an area of roughly 2,000 km² and, as of the most recent census data, has a population of about 1.1 million residents. Historically part of Sichuan Province, Tongnan was incorporated into Chongqing when the municipality was established in 1997. The district’s economy is a mix of agriculture, manufacturing, and emerging tourism. It is served by major transportation corridors, including the G93 Chengdu–Chongqing Ring Expressway and the Chongqing–Guizhou railway, facilitating links to both Chongqing’s urban core and neighboring provinces.

Etymology / Origin
The name “Tongnan” combines two Chinese characters: “Tong” (铜) historically meaning “copper” or “to connect”, and “Nan” (南) meaning “south”. The designation likely reflects the district’s geographic position south of the historic central area of Chongqing and may also reference historical copper mining activities in the region.

  • Climate: Tongnan experiences a humid subtropical climate, with four distinct seasons, hot summers, mild winters, and abundant rainfall concentrated in the summer months.
