Tomohiro Maekawa

Tomohiro Maekawa (前川 知宏, born 1945) is a Japanese computer scientist and professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo. He is most widely recognized for his contributions to distributed computing, particularly for proposing Maekawa’s algorithm—a decentralized mutual exclusion algorithm designed for distributed systems. The algorithm, first described in his 1985 paper “A Fast Mutual Exclusion Algorithm for Decentralized Systems,” reduces the communication overhead required to achieve mutual exclusion by employing a quorum-based approach.

Maekawa’s research interests span a broad range of topics in computer science, including parallel processing, network theory, and algorithmic design. He has authored numerous articles on distributed algorithms, fault tolerance, and performance evaluation of parallel systems. In addition to his academic work, Maekawa has been involved in standardization activities related to network protocols and has served on advisory committees for several governmental and industrial research projects in Japan.

His contributions have been cited extensively in the fields of distributed systems and parallel computing, influencing subsequent developments in resource allocation, consensus mechanisms, and scalable system architectures.
