Tommie (Tommy) Camilla Stephens Barfield (1888 – 1949) was an American educator who played a pioneering role in the development of public education in Collier County, Florida. She served as the county’s first school superintendent and is commemorated by the Tommie Barfield Elementary School and a Great Floridian plaque.
Early life and family
Born in 1888, Tommie Barfield moved with her family to Marco Island, Florida, in 1901. In 1906 she married James Madison Barfield. The couple established a residence on the island, and in 1910 Barfield converted her home into a hotel, supplementing the family’s income by producing and selling jellies and candies to guests.
Career in education
Barfield became actively involved in local education during the early development of Collier County. In 1923, when Collier County was organized, she was appointed its first school superintendent, a position she held until her death in 1949. In this capacity she oversaw the establishment of the county’s first public schools, advocated for school construction and resources, and worked to improve literacy and educational standards for the island’s residents.
Legacy
Barfield’s contributions to Collier County’s education system have been recognized through several honors:
- Tommie Barfield Elementary School in Marco Island, Florida, is named in her honor. The school’s campus includes a plaque commemorating her as a “Great Floridian,” a program administered by the State of Florida to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the state’s history.
- Historical accounts and local newspaper articles, such as those published in The News‑Press (2002, 2004), highlight her role as a pioneering female leader and a tenacious advocate for infrastructure improvements, including road development on Marco Island.
