Tomina, Sanski Most

Tomina is a village located in the municipality of Sanski Most, in the Una-Sana Canton of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, within Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Geography

Tomina is situated in the north-western part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, approximately 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) north-east of the town center of Sanski Most. The village lies in a predominantly rural area, characterized by rolling hills, agricultural land, and proximity to tributaries of the Sana River. Its landscape is typical of the Bosnian Krajina region.

History

Like much of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Tomina's history is deeply intertwined with that of the broader region. It was historically part of the Ottoman Empire for centuries, then came under Austro-Hungarian rule from 1878 to 1918. Following World War I, it became part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, and later the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

During the Bosnian War (1992-1995), the area around Sanski Most, including Tomina, experienced significant conflict and population displacement. Many residents were affected by the wartime events. Following the Dayton Agreement in 1995, Tomina remained within the territory of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Post-war, efforts for return and reconstruction have been ongoing, though the demographic makeup and size of the village may have shifted considerably compared to pre-war figures.

Demographics

According to the 2013 census conducted in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Tomina had a total population of 1,481 inhabitants. Historically, the broader region of Sanski Most, including villages like Tomina, was ethnically diverse. The demographic composition of Tomina, particularly post-Bosnian War, predominantly consists of Bosniaks, reflecting regional population shifts.

Economy and Infrastructure

The economy of Tomina is primarily agricultural, with local residents engaged in farming, livestock breeding, and forestry. Basic infrastructure such as local roads, a mosque (reflecting the predominant religious affiliation of its post-war population), and potentially a primary school serve the community. Like many rural areas in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Tomina faces challenges related to economic development and maintaining a young population.
