Thomas Edward Savill (born 16 May 1983) is a former English cricketer and educator. He played first-class cricket as a right-handed batsman and right-arm medium-fast bowler, primarily for Cambridge University, and later transitioned into a career in school leadership in Australia.
Early Life and Education
Savill was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, and grew up in Nottingham. He attended Fernwood School in Wollaton and later Bilborough College. He went on to study Biological Sciences and Education at Homerton College, University of Cambridge, where he also earned a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).
Cricket Career
Savill began his cricket journey at Wollaton Cricket Club, making his first-team debut at age 16 in 1999. He progressed through Nottinghamshire's youth system, representing the county at under-17 level and debuting for their second XI in September 2000.
List A Cricket: Savill made his List A debut for the Nottinghamshire Cricket Board in May 2001 against Bedfordshire in the Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy. He played two List A matches in total, scoring 50 runs (with a high score of 35 not out) and taking one wicket.
First-Class Cricket: His first-class debut came for Cambridge University against Middlesex in 2002. He also made a single first-class appearance for Nottinghamshire against West Indies A that same year. Over 17 first-class matches (16 for Cambridge UCCE), he scored 363 runs at an average of 18.15, including three half-centuries with a highest score of 59. With the ball, he took 36 wickets at an average of 50.88, with best figures of 4/62. He also held 12 catches.
Savill earned his cricket Blue for four consecutive seasons (2003–2006) and captained Cambridge in his final year during the 2006 Varsity Match against Oxford. In the 2005 one-day Varsity Match at Lord's, he took 4/28 and scored an unbeaten 33 to guide Cambridge to a five-wicket victory.
After retiring from professional cricket in 2006, he continued playing club cricket for Teddington Cricket Club in the Middlesex County Cricket League.
Post-Cricket Career
Savill spent 12 years as a teacher at Dulwich Prep School in South London. In 2018, he moved to Australia and joined Trinity Grammar School in Kew as Deputy Head of the Junior School. By 2021, he was appointed as the eighth Head of Junior School at Scotch College Melbourne, also serving as Vice Principal.
