Tol Tolono is a village located in Champaign County in the central region of the state of Illinois, United States. It lies approximately 12 miles (19 km) east of the city of Champaign and is situated at an elevation of about 735 feet (224 m) above sea level. The village encompasses a total area of 2.41 square miles (6.24 km²), all of which is land, according to the United States Census Bureau.
History
Tolono was founded in 1859 concurrent with the construction of the Illinois Central Railroad, which promoted settlement and commercial activity in the area. The name “Tolono” is believed to be derived from a Native American word meaning “good place,” though exact etymology is not definitively documented. The village was officially incorporated in 1869. Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Tolono served as a railway junction and agricultural hub, supporting surrounding farms with grain elevators, livestock markets, and related services.
