Tokyo Tribe (film)

Tokyo Tribe is a 2014 Japanese musical action-comedy film directed by Sion Sono. It is based on the manga series Tokyo Tribe2 by Santa Inoue. The film is set in a dystopian, alternate-reality Tokyo where various street gangs, known as "tribes," rule different districts and maintain a fragile peace through a system of respect and territory.

The narrative centers on the escalating conflict between these tribes, particularly after the emergence of Mera, the deranged son of a powerful Yakuza boss, who begins a violent campaign to disrupt the established order and seize control. His actions ignite a full-scale war, drawing in various factions, including the Musashino Saru, whose leader Kai has a mysterious past connection to Mera, and the Wu-Ronz, led by the charismatic Lord Buppa. The story unfolds through a series of elaborate action sequences, often incorporating hip-hop musical numbers, as characters rap their dialogue and inner thoughts.

Known for its audacious and highly stylized approach, Tokyo Tribe is almost entirely delivered through rap, blending elements of hip-hop culture with over-the-top violence, elaborate fight choreography, and a vibrant, fantastical aesthetic. The film explores themes of power, loyalty, revenge, and the breakdown of society, often with a satirical edge. It features a large ensemble cast, including Ryohei Suzuki as Mera, Young Dais as Kai, Nana Seino as Sunmi, and an appearance by rapper D.O.

Upon its release, Tokyo Tribe garnered mixed but often passionate reviews, praised for its originality, ambition, and unique visual style, while some found its excessive violence and rap dialogue polarizing. It has since gained a significant cult following for its unconventional narrative and daring execution.
