Tmesisternus quadriplagiatus is a species of longhorn beetle in the family Cerambycidae, subfamily Lamiinae, tribe Tmesisternini. It was first described by the Austrian entomologist Stephan von Breuning in 1939. The species is known from Papua New Guinea.
Taxonomy
The species belongs to the genus Tmesisternus Latreille, 1829, which comprises over 300 species and subspecies distributed primarily across the Indo-Australian region, including New Guinea and surrounding islands. The original description was published in Novae species Cerambycidarum VII, part of the Festschrift zum 60. Geburtstage von Professor Dr. Embrik Strand (volume 5, pages 144–290, Riga). The holotype is reported to be deposited in the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien. The species has not undergone major taxonomic revisions or synonymies since its initial description and remains recognized as a valid species.
Physical characteristics
The species exhibits the elongated, cylindrical body form characteristic of the Cerambycidae. It is described as having metallic scales or spots on the elytra, including a large lateral posthumeral spot on each elytron, and a pointed spine at the apical elytral marginal angle. The body is predominantly dark in coloration, ranging from dark brown to black. The species epithet quadriplagiatus derives from Latin terms meaning "four-banded" or "four-spotted," referring to the elytral markings. Detailed measurements of body length and precise marking details are not extensively documented in accessible sources.
Distribution and habitat
The species is recorded from Papua New Guinea. Its known distribution is limited to the mainland of Papua New Guinea, with no confirmed occurrences on offshore islands or beyond national borders. The species is associated with tropical rainforest and lowland woodland habitats. It has been reported in association with plants in the genus Rapanea (family Primulaceae), which may serve as hosts for its larval stage.
Biology and ecology
As a member of the Lamiinae subfamily, the species follows the typical holometabolous life cycle of Cerambycidae, comprising egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Larvae are xylophagous, feeding on the xylem tissue of dead or dying hardwood trees, contributing to the decomposition of woody material in forest ecosystems.
