Tiyas Air Base

Tiyas Air Base, also designated as T‑4 Air Base, is a military airfield located in the Syrian Arab Republic, approximately 45 km east of the city of Homs in the Homs Governorate. The base lies near the village of Tiyas (also spelled Tiyas al‑Qadim) and serves as a key installation for the Syrian Arab Air Force (SyAAF).

History
Construction of the airfield began in the 1970s under a Soviet‑U.S.S.R. assistance program, with the facility becoming operational in the early 1980s. Throughout its existence, the base has functioned primarily as a strategic hub for fighter and transport aircraft of the SyAAF. During the Syrian civil war, which started in 2011, Tiyas Air Base remained under government control and was repeatedly targeted by opposition forces.

In September 2015, the Russian Aerospace Forces commenced the deployment of personnel and equipment to Tiyas Air Base as part of the Russian military intervention in the Syrian civil war. The base subsequently served as a staging point for Russian aircraft conducting operations over Syrian territory, including the operation of Su‑30SM, Su‑34, and Su‑35 combat jets, as well as support aircraft such as Il‑78 tankers.

Facilities
The airbase comprises a primary runway capable of handling heavy combat aircraft, multiple hardened aircraft shelters, maintenance hangars, fuel storage facilities, and support infrastructure. The runway length is reported to be approximately 3,050 meters (10,007 feet), accommodating both fixed‑wing and rotary‑wing aircraft.

Operational Use

  • Syrian Arab Air Force: The base hosts squadrons equipped with fighter aircraft such as the MiG‑23, MiG‑29, and later generations of Soviet/Russian designs. It also supports transport units operating Il‑76 and An‑26 aircraft.
  • Russian Aerospace Forces: Since 2015, Russian units have utilized the facility for air‑refueling, reconnaissance, and strike missions, as well as for logistical support of Russian forces operating elsewhere in Syria.

Strategic Significance
Tiyas Air Base’s central location within Syria provides strategic reach to both northern and southern theatres of operation. Its capability to support a range of aircraft types, coupled with the presence of Russian forces, has enhanced the Syrian government’s operational flexibility and contributed to the broader coalition’s air campaign.

Incidents
The base has been the target of several attacks, including rocket and drone strikes attributed to various opposition groups. Notable incidents include a 2018 drone strike that caused limited damage to aircraft on the ground, though no major operational disruption was reported.

Current Status
As of the latest available open‑source information (2023), Tiyas Air Base remains under the control of the Syrian government, with continued joint use by Syrian and Russian military aviation units. Ongoing security conditions in the surrounding region limit independent verification of the base’s current operational tempo.
